Boston to Cape Cod without a car: choose the right arrival
A car-free trip works best when your arrival point, lodging and main activities fit the same transport plan.
“Cape Cod” is too broad a destination for choosing a ticket. Decide whether you need Hyannis, Woods Hole/Falmouth, Provincetown or somewhere else, then check every part of the journey for the same travel date.
| Mode | Useful starting point | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| CapeFLYER train | Boston South Station to Hyannis | Summer weekend service; use the train guide before relying on it. |
| Plymouth & Brockton coach | Boston/Logan links with Hyannis and Woods Hole/Falmouth | Choose the correct route and stop; road travel and onward connections need allowance. Plymouth & Brockton routes, schedules and alerts |
| Boston–Provincetown passenger ferry | A Provincetown-centered visit | Operator timetable, weather notices and your route from the pier. Bay State Cruise Company service alerts |
Build the trip backward
First pick the return departure you cannot miss. Work backward through the local connection, luggage collection and boarding time. Then construct the arrival day. A convenient outward ticket is not enough if the beach bus finishes before you need to return or the next coach uses a different stop.
For each leg, record departure point, arrival point, date, day of week, ticket requirement, transfer allowance and fallback. Use the operator’s current timetable; a route map proves geography, not that service operates when you need it.
Choose lodging after checking the last connection
A low room rate can be a poor saving if it creates repeated taxi journeys or difficult walks with luggage. Compare the exact address with arrival, groceries or meals, and your main activity. Our base checklist helps define those requirements without calling an entire town walkable.
Separate fares from access costs
CCRTA advertises free fares on its fixed routes. That is not a promise that the intercity journey, train, ferry or every other CCRTA service is free. Nor does a bus fare answer the beach-admission question. CCRTA fixed-route fare policy.
Use the worksheet to compare whole-party, round-trip costs. Add a fallback amount only when you have a credible alternative; a blank price is more honest than assuming an unconfirmed taxi will be available at no extra cost.
